Postmates (Delivery Driver) - - Gig Review & Referral Code

We have an affiliate relationship with some companies where we get a referral bonus if you sign-up to werk a gig with our code. See our full disclosures.

Postmates is an on-demand delivery service founded in 2011. Postmates considers themselves a logistics company getting food, groceries, and alcohol from point A to B. The way Postmates makes their money is by charging a delivery fee for food which can be paid by the consumer/customer or the restaurant (most likely to get more orders).

As a Postmates Driver, your main job is to pick up food from a specific location and deliver it to a specific customer. The majority of these locations are restaurants, bars and grocery stores. You are getting paid essentially to be a delivery person that deliveries food in great shape. The better at delivering a product in a great shape, the more tips you make and the more money that is in your pocket.

Company Claims

Postmates makes no claim about what you will make as wages vary widely based on time, location and such.

A large amount of gig economy positions have stopped claiming hourly wages because it can come back and bite them in the butt.

Glassdoor Average (source)

Postmates has a decent amount of reviews and salaries posted on Glassdoor. There are three postings for a Postmates Courier and three for a delivery driver. The per hour pay varies a little on those posts but the average of the ones with a lot of salaries posted is $10 per hour.

4. Detailed Pay Information

As a Postmates Delivery Driver (also known as a Courier), you are a third party contractor. With this said pay can vary greatly between customer to customer sometimes based on skill and knowledge and sometimes based on luck and just being in the right place at the right time.

With Postmates you are going to get your pay primarily through deliveries but you can also get tips and bonuses as well.

4-1. Deliveries

As a Postmates Courier, the primary way you will get paid is via deliveries. Deliveries come through delivery offers and can be stacked however do remember it is absolutely crucial that you deliver orders as you accept them.

How delivery pay is determined according to Postmates website

An amount for each completed pick up
An amount for each completed drop off
A per minute waited rate for time you spend at the pickup location
A per mile rate for the distance between the pickup & drop-off locations
Any blitz bonuses that are shown when you accept a delivery offer

Hot Spots

When an area is particularly busy Postmates will glow that area in red on the map. Once again similar to an Uber Surge. I am not sure if this is to indicate a “blitz” or just high demand. I will let you know based off of my “On The Job Experience”.

Postmates Hot Spot -

An example Hot Spot from Postmates.

Stacking Deliveries

Stacking deliveries is an easy way to make more money faster. When a restaurant has multiple deliveries you can run all of them. How this works specifically is not very clear as Postmates gives very little information on their website. I will give more information after my “On The Job Experience”.

4-2. Tips

Tips with Postmates are very cool as you get to keep 100% and Delivery Drivers typically get tipped. The tip for Postmates is on top of your order instead of inside a guaranteed amount such as with DoorDash. Before people can do anything else on Postmates they have to finish rating you and fill out the tip section. This helps you the likelihood someone will tip.

4-3. Bonuses

A pretty cool thing about Postmates is the number of bonuses they offer below are the bonuses and an explanation of them all.

Postmates Blitz

Postmates Blitz is very similar to Uber’s Surge. When demand grows so does price so you make more the busier it is.

Blitz as of recently used to be shown by a multiplier exactly like Uber but now it is done with an exact dollar amount. This is to increase transparency. Unlike most rideshare companies Postmates has very little of this information online so when I do my “On The Job Experience” I will post more about this.

Postmates Bonus

I didn’t see any explanation of this on Postmates website but since I have had Postmates downloaded they tell me about bonuses every day for driving during certain times.

Postmates Perks

Postmate Perks are special perks given to drivers to make sure they drive more. For a little inside baseball, this is most likely because a big part of the gig economy is recruiting people to do the job. This is exactly why most gig economy jobs offer sign-up bonuses. If you’ve ever been in sales you know its always easier to keep a client then to get a new one. In this case you the Postmates Courier are the client.

Postmates Perks is a nice little way to keep Postmates Couriers (Postmates Delivery Drivers) working long term. With Postmates Perks you get special bonuses for doing a certain number of deliveries. This way people that may not even care about making the Postmates wage much continue it part-time for the perks.

Below is a list of the perks.
Hours of work per month calculated on assuming a delivery takes 30 minutes.

Postmates Perkspot
(10 deliveries/month) (About 5 hours of work per month)
With Postmates Perkspot you get access to deals to local and national shops. Which ones I am not sure. When I do my “On The Job Experience” I will let you know more.

Postmates Plus Unlimited
(25 deliveries/month) (About 12.5 hours of work per month)
With Postmates Plus Unlimited you get free deliveries over $15 (Postmates Perk version is over $20) and you never get charged for a blitz. This is traditionally $9.99/month.

5. Getting Paid With Postmates (The Process)

Direct Deposit

Postmates pays via direct deposit weekly for activity done Monday through Sunday of the previous week. Your pay should be in your bank account on Wednesday or Thursday (Source). Direct deposits cost $0.15 for some reason (a stripe fee). Its honestly very minimal but you think Postmates could not be cheap and just eat the $0.15 cost.

Instant Deposit

If you have a Visa or Mastercard debit card you should be eligible for instant deposits. Instant Deposits cost $0.50 per instant deposit. Instant deposits generally take about 15-30 minutes, pretty fast.

If you need help setting up instant deposits here is a guide to setting it up.

6. Additional Opportunities With Postmates

With Postmates there are a few opportunities to make a few extra bucks and save a few extra bucks and they are below.

Income Opportunities With Postmates

Opportunities to earn extra passive income with food delivery are rather limited however below are a few we have found.

Wrapify –
Car Wrap Advertising

Wrapify is a company that will pay you for a partial or full car wrap. Pay is $84 – $452 per month depending on the amount of your car you would like to wrap, your location and the demand for car wrap advertising.

Carvertise –
Car Wrap Advertising

Carvertise is a company that will pay you for a partial or full car wrap.  Carvertise described their payment model as the following “Our standard payment rate is $100/month. Sometimes there are more specialized campaigns that can pay up to $200 / month but this is not common. We also offer drivers the ability to make additional passive income through parking their cars in certain places at certain times. Our going pay rate for this is typically $30/hour.”

Saving Opportunities With Postmates

Opportunities to earn extra passive income with grocery delivery are rather limited however below are a few we have found.

MileIQ – Save On Taxes

When driving for a business purpose you can deduct your mileage for a pretty good amount, a little over $0.50 per mile. But keeping track of that mileage can be very hard. But there is a solution.

Get MileIQ so you can track exactly how much you could be missing on Mileage and I am absolutely certain you will get at least triple your investment in tax savings. Best of all you won’t be funding the government to waste your money.

7. Expenses

One of the biggest disadvantages of Postmates is the personal expense. However, you gotta spend money to make money. Like a lot of portions of our delivery reviews, this is very similar to some sections of our other reviews.

Vehicle Wear & Tear

Vehicle Wear & Tear is the cost of using your car. That includes maintenance, tire replacements and such. This number includes fuel. AAA puts this number at 60.8 cents for an average size sedan and 46.4 cents for a small sedan (like my Mazda 3). This obviously means the more mileage you put on your car the more it will cost you. The nice this about mileage is you can write it off! In 2018 according to MileIQ, you can write off 54.5 cents per mile. This can be big tax savings.

It is all really based on the value of your car, make, model and a variety of factors. Even where you live can play a part in it. For example, if you live in Toledo, Ohio (The pothole capital of Ohio) like myself then your wear & tear will likely be higher then that of a city that elects semi-competent leaders that can fill holes in the road.

Gas is one of the biggest out front expenses with most any job in the gig economy. Repair & Maintenance is bad but at the same time the cost can be reduced by taking better care of your care or it can be put off. Gas is a cost you cannot get around. According to the same AAA article above gas can cost 3.68 cents per mile (electric cars) to 13.8 cents per mile (Pick-up trucks) depending on your vehicle.

NOTE: Tracking Mileage

Tracking mileage can be very difficult. Your job as a Postmates Courier is to deliver food. Not to track where you’ve been. I highly suggest using MileIQ, if you use my affiliate link below you get 20% off an annual membership and help fund This is a savings of $10.00 and this program will help you save even more than that in the long run!

7-1. Recommended Items (Top 5)

These items are not necessary for you to get but ones I highly recommend. These should be useful for you to do your job and to make more money while working for Postmates. Below is a quick list (only my top 5 recommendations), I highly recommend looking over our complete Postmates Recommended Item List for the complete list.

Easy Communication With A Great Bluetooth Headset

I personally think these headsets are great and the ease of communication is super easy. It makes calling people on the road and super legal as well in authoritarian states that outlaw talking the phone while driving.

Thermal Bags For Keeping Food Cold

This bag is non-branded and can be used not only for Postmates but other gig economy delivery jobs like DoorDash, Instacart or Shipt.

Car Charger & Charger Cables

One thing you want to make sure about is your phone doesn’t die while doing Postmates so you can call the customer if need be. Having a car charger and cords will help you make sure your phone doesn’t die.

In addition car chargers are super important for other gig economy jobs as well so its a good investment. Below is the charger and three types of cords, USB, USB type C & iPhone cords.

USB C cable – this is for newer andriod phone and ironically newer Apple labtops too.

iPhone cable – this is for newer Apple iPhones

USB cable – this is for older android phones and many common older Bluetooth headphones.

Keep Track Of What Happens On The Road

In sales, we call it CYOA (Cover Your Own Ass), make sure you are not at fault and that’s what a dash cam is good for. With a Dashcam, you will have video evidence of a crash to prove your innocence. The model below is an entry level Dashcam. The ones in our list can be a little more expensive but come with more features.

Easy To Use Magnetic Phone Mount

I’m not a big phone mount fan but I know a lot of people are. I think this looks like a great phone mount and the reviews are very good (4.5/5).

One customer went as far to say “This is the best idea for cell phones since sliced bread.”

7-2. On The Job Expenses

Still in progress.

8. Hours

Postmates has done a very good job with this section. On Postmates website they have highlighted what their “Peak Hours” are. According to Postmates their peak hours are…

Every day from 10:30 am to 1:30 [ Lunch Rush ]

This would be the lunch rush and is most likely citywide but I would stick to wherever there is the most manufacturing or office spaces. These people may not have long lunches and delivery would be nice for them.

Every day from 5:30 am to 8:30 [ Dinner Rush ]

This would be the dinner rush. Most likely this will be residential as people are getting home from work, maybe tired from work and don’t want to go get food during rush hour traffic.

In addition, the busiest days for Postmates are Friday, Saturday and Sunday as people are beginning and ending their weekend. Please note these times may vary from market to market but this is generally a good rule. In addition, if you are looking for deliveries it is always best to head to hot spots.

9. Pros & Cons

Here is a quick list of what we liked about Postmates and didn’t so much or about what we read online. As for all gig economy jobs wages can be below minimum wage given the worst circumstances because this being a universal “con” we do not list it on any reviews.

Great Mixture of Driving & Walking
Flexible Hours
You Get To Keep 100% of Tips
Postmate Perks
Blitz & Stacking of Orders Allows You To Make More

Wear & Tear On Your Car
Gas Expense Is Not Reimbursable
Fees For Direct Deposit
-This is not major just looks really bad that Postmates can’t eat a freaking $0.15 charge.

UberEats – this is a direct competitor to Postmates. You can log on to both to help you find deliveries when it’s slow. Also, you can do Uber rides!

Lime – Lime allows scooter pick up at 9pm and that is right when the dinner rush ends. This is a great gig to do right after the rush.

DoorDash – Just like UberEats this is a competitor to Postmates. Also, it has a great sign-up bonus.
