1. Automotive Accessories
Covers & Mats
Since a large part of your time of delivering in the gig economy will be driving it’s smart to make it an enjoyable experience. Here are a few car accessories that will keep your car cool and clean.
The worst thing about driving in the summer is the heat and especially burning your hand on a burning hot steering wheel. This cover is great for keeping your steering wheel cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Plus being black & white it goes with most everything.
These seat covers help keep your car clean and protect your seats. Also, it goes with the steering wheel cover!
Floor mats are essential in keeping your car clean with any gig economy job. With delivering if you spill some food you can just take these mats out and spray them clean at a self-clean car wash. But these affordable and versatile mats can be used with Uber, Lyft, and other rideshares as well. The price on these are killer too.
Key Accessories & Car Decorations
One of the worst things that can happen when you get a delivery is you can’t find your keys. These key finders help with that. One is more expensive but very high quality and the other is a little cheaper. Also, I’ve recommended two very helpful multi-tools. Finally, everyone likes their car to look nice. It’s a nice morale boost and you’ll be sitting in it a lot so you should like it.
Car Cleaning & Car Scents
It is important you keep your car clean while doing delivery. I highly recommend a vacuum, cleaning kit and the sticky paste will get small crumbs that can be very difficult to get. Car details are very expensive so keeping your car clean by yourself is a way to get major money savings.
Along with keeping your car clean its important it smells clean. A good scent in your car can keep your moral up and if you plan on also doing Uber or Lyft rideshare along with delivery can help you get larger tips doing that as well.
In the unfortunate case that your car’s battery is down having jumper cables is imperative. The items below are what you really should have just in case something ever happens. The first kit will help you with basic cable, a blanket and other gear to help you get through your car being broke down. The 2nd is a battery so you can jump your car yourself. Finally the flashlight and blanket should be obvious, having two high-quality ones are always good to have around.
Winter Car Gear
For those of us north of the Mason Dixson line having winter grear for the colder months is very important. This includes snow brushes, ice scrapers and more.
2. Bluetooth Headsets
Honestly one of the best inventions ever. Growing up in the ’90s & ’00s these were viewed as absurdly nerdy but they are SUPER convenient! Plus now these Bluetooth devices are perceived as less nerdy as they’ve become cooler and slicker. Finally, these make it so you can use your phone for a GPS while talking to someone. Below are my suggestions for Bluetooth headsets.
Two Ear Headsets
I like these type of headsets because if needed you can cover both ears when not driving and have a pretty noise-canceled & background noise-free environment. However when you’re driving only cover one ear or it could be very dangerous!
I personally use these as sort of a back up for calls. I mainly use these pairs while working on projects at a coffee shop or while having to do actual shopping if I don;t want to be distracted.
Apple Airpod Headsets & Accessories
If you have an Apple phone I suggest sticking with your expensive choice lol. In all honesty, you went with Apple products for a reason because on their consistent quality don’t ruin that by choosing an off-brand or different brand. Air-Pods were made to work with Apple iPhones so I suggest you pick them if you have an apple phone. Also I suggest covering your investment with a cover.
In the below list I included the AirPods and AirPod Pro as well as corresponding cases. Please make sure you double-check you’re ordering the correct one.
If you have an Android phone which I much prefer due to cost and preformance I suggest using some of these Air Pod like headsets. They are from different companies and range in pricing so anyone can afford a good headset.
3. Car Chargers & Cables
Android, Apple & Universal Phone Chargers
One thing you want to make sure about is your phone doesn’t die while doing delivery so you can call the customer if need be, look over lists, and such. Having a car charger and cords will help you make sure your phone doesn’t die.
In addition, car chargers are super important for other gig economy jobs as well so it’s a good investment. Below are the charger and three types of cords, USB, USB type C & iPhone cords. Plus a super-cord with all the outlets in one!
In order to charge your phone in your car you will likely need a car charger to plug your phone charging cables into. Based on my research these are the ones I suggest.
Many new phones (and new cars) do not have aux ports (looking at you iPhones) but many do and if I had to rely strictly on the radio for entertainment I’d go mad. With that said I did find an aux cord for newer iPhones. Below are some items for entertainment you should consider while delivering in the gig economy.
4. Dash Cams
In sales, we call it CYOA (Cover Your Own Ass), make sure you are not at fault and that’s what a dashcam is good for. With a Dashcam, you will have video evidence of a crash to prove your innocence. I cannot stress the importance of one of these, they’re pretty much like secondary insurance. If you’re someone that worries a lot these should be good so you can prove your innocence. Also sometimes they catch funny or strange things on video so dash cameras are always interesting to use.
If you ever plan on doing Uber, Lyft or any other rideshare I highly suggest getting an internal camera too . People can say anything so having a camera to prove your point is always good.
5. Educational Items
One great thing about working in the gig economy is it gives you time to study and work on yourself. Below are some books to help you get more tips and really are great for your life. If you read this you should be able to get higher tips and genuinely live a happier life. These are a few of my favorite books I suggest you check them out between delivery runs.
6. Gig Economy Delivery Gear
Insulated Bags / Thermal Bags
These bags will help you keep food cold or hot and are not branded by DoorDash, Postmates, Grubhub, or any other so you can use them even for your own groceries. Most delivery gigs actually require you to have a thermal bag of some sort to keep food hot or cold in. You should be given a few bags when you start with most delivery gigs but if you want extra or non-branded bags I suggest the following…
Gig Economy Delivery Cup Holders
Something I never thought about was having a cup holder for your drinks. If you are carrying 2 or more drinks it becomes a bit much, these cup holders will help with that a lot. Also, some do have a call to action to “tip your driver” AKA give you extra money. That’s always good for me though I don’t know how you might feel about it, hopefully, you’d feel good about it or you won’t be making a ton of money.
In addition, I did include one Insulated bag with cup holders. I did not see it until now so it is not in the picks above but I think that is a great insulated bag and cup holder. It kills two birds with one stone!
7. Personal Protection
I personally believe the gig economy is very safe but if you’re in a shady neighborhood you may feel safer caring some protection. I am a very strong supporter of the 2nd amendment and believe the only person that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy (or gal) with a gun. However, not everyone feels comfortable with a firearm so below are some products you can use for protection.
This list is from most affordable to most expensive however all are good. Mace is a good inexpensive option and the mace gun and taser both look like guns. In most instances of self defense a trigger is never pull and a gun is never used. People are not stupid and will make the right decision when threatened with appropriate defensive force.
8. Phone Mounts
Gotta tell the truth personally I don’t use phone mounts when I drive. So I’m not even taking my own medicine (lol). I’m just a merc. If you’ll buy it I’m willing to sell it. With this said over the years I really have come to enjoy the idea of phone mounts. All jokes aside tho phone mounts aren’t for everyone but for those not born with a phone in their hand they are very helpful. Here are a few of my suggestions based on my research of phone mounts.
9. Rain Protection Gear / Umbrella
Having an Umbrella is always helpful in the Midwest and probably anywhere in the country. Many times peolpe order to-go because they don’t want to go out in the rain.
